About Fred R David
Dr. Fred R. David is the author of three mainstream strategic management textbooks titled Strategic Management, Concepts in Strategic Management, and Cases in Strategic Management. These texts have been on a two year revision cycle since 1986 when the first edition was published by Merrill Publishing Company. The 13th edition is being published by Prentice Hall in March 2010. These texts are among the best selling strategic management textbooks in the world and have been used at more than 400 colleges and universities – such as Harvard University, Duke University, Carnegie-Mellon, John Hopkins, the University of Maryland, UNC-Chapel Hill, Florida State University, and Wake Forest University. This textbook is translated and published into Chinese, Japanese, Farsi, Spanish, Indonesian, Indian, and Arabic and widely used across Asia, South America, and Mexico.
Approximately 75,000 students annually read Dr. David’s textbook as well as thousands of businesspersons. This book has led the field of strategic management for more than a decade in providing an applications, practitioner-approach to the discipline. David also is author of 149 other refereed publications, including 36 journal articles, 53 Proceedings publications, and 60 strategic planning cases. He has articles published is such journals as Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Applied Psychology, Long Range Planning, and Advanced Management Journal.
A native of Whiteville, North Carolina, Fred David received a BS Degree in Mathematics and an MBA Degree from Wake Forest University before being employed as a bank manager with United Carolina Bank. He received a PhD in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina where he majored in Management. Currently the TranSouth Professor of Strategic Planning at Francis Marion University (FMU) in Florence, South Carolina, Dr. David has also taught at Auburn University, Mississippi State University, East Carolina University, the University of South Carolina, and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Dr. David recently received the Lifetime Honorary Professorship Award from the Universidad Ricardo Palma in Lima, Peru, several days after he delivered the keynote speech at the 21st Annual Latin American Congress on Strategy hosted by the Centrum School of Business in Lima. He also was invited to provide and delivered an eight hour Strategic Planning Workshop to the faculty at Pontificia Universidad Catolica Del in Lima, Peru. Dr. David has received numerous Awards, including FMU’s Board of Trustees Research Scholar Award, and the university’s Award for Excellence in Research given annually to the best faculty researcher on campus. He received the prestigious Phil Carroll Advancement of Management Award, given annually by the Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) to a management scholar for outstanding recent contributions in management research. He has served on the Southern Management Association’s Board of Directors for three years and on the Editorial Review Board of the Advanced Management Journal for more than a decade.

He has developed and markets the CheckMATE Strategic Planning Software – an industry leading business planning software package. He has served as a consultant and strategic planning facilitator for corporations, law firms, medical practices, and universities. Most recently Dr. David served as strategic planning facilitator for the South Carolina Coalition of Science and Mathematics (SCCMS) and as a consultant to Carolina Healthcare Systems. He has been married 30 years to his wife Joy and they have three children.
